8. RICHARD BURTON
The legendary actor and the two-time husband of Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton is best known for his roles in Cleopatra, Where Eagles Dare, The Longest Day, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Robe, The Night of the Iguana and many more. The Welsh actor was also one of the most handsome people of his time.
Burton was born Richard Walter Jenkins in Pontrhydyfen, a Welsh-speaking town, as the 12th child in the family. His father, a coal miner, was a drunk and a gambler. His mother died giving birth to her 13th child. After his mother’s death, Burton’s sister Cecilia and her husband took him in. His father occasionally visited but he never represented any kind of father figure to the boy.
In grammar school, Richard became close with his schoolmaster Philip Burton, who encouraged him to act in school plays and was an important model for the boy. He could not legally adopt him but several years later Richard legally changed his last name to Burton in his honor.
