20. FRANCES MCDORMAND
Frances McDormand is an award-winning American actress, one of the few people to have received the so-called Triple Crown of Acting – an Oscar (Best Actress in Fargo), a Tony (Best Actress in Good People) and an Emmy (Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Olive Kitteridge). She is the wife of Joel Coen, one of the two Coen brothers, and has appeared in many of their movies, most notably Fargo, Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Burn After Reading and The Man Who Wasn’t There.
McDormand was born in Chicago in 1957 and was given up for adoption upon birth. Her adoptive parents were of Canadian origin. Her mother was a nurse and her father was a receptionist and a Disciples of Christ pastor. McDormand once stated in an interview that it is possible her biological father might have been one of the members of her adoptive father’s church. Her father was a traveling pastor so the family moved around a lot when Frances was a little girl.
