18. EARTHA KITT

Eartha Mae Kitt was a singer, actress, dancer, comedian, cabaret performer and an activist. Orson Welles once called her “the most exciting woman in the world,” and indeed she was as incredible woman who led an exciting, extravagant but often tragic life. She is best remembered for her role of Catwoman in 1967 Batman TV show, as well as for smash hits “C’est Si Bon”, “Where Is My Man,” “Under The Bridges of Paris”, “Just An Old-Fashioned Girl” and “Santa Baby.”

She was born on January 17, 1927, a date she found out only when she was 71 because she never before had access to her birth certificate. Her mother was of African-American and Cherokee descent, and her father is believed by some to be a white man of German ancestry. She was raised by Anna Mae Riley, who, when Eartha was eight, married a man who didn’t want Eartha so she was sent to another family. She was sent to another family and when Riley died she went to New York to live with Mamie Kitt.
