16. ERIC CLAPTON
The English guitarist, singer, producer and songwriter is, by all accounts, one of the most influential guitar players of all times. He is also the only person to have been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times – once as a solo artist, once as a member of the Yardbirds and once as a member of Cream. Some of his most famous songs include “Layla,” “Cocaine,” “Tears in Heaven,” “Crossroads” and “White Room.”
Clapton was born in 1945 in Surrey. His mother was 16 when she gave birth to him and his father was a 25-year old Canadian soldier who returned to Canada before Eric was born. He actually grew up with his maternal grandparents, whom for a long while he believed were his parents. He saw his mother regularly, but he believed she was his older sister. When Eric was still a boy, his mother married another Canadian soldier and moved to Germany, leaving Eric permanently with his grandparents.
