12. NELSON MANDELA
Nelson Mandela is one of the most important political and social figures of the 20th century. The adamant fighter against apartheid (for which he spent 27 years in prison), philanthropist and politician, Mandela was the first ever democratically elected president of South Africa and the man who changed the face of the entire continent. During his lifetime, he received over 200 honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Mandela was born in 1918 in a village in Cape Province. His father Gadla was a local chief who had four wives. Mandela’s mother Nosekeni Fanny was his third wife. He grew up in his mother’s village with two sisters. When he was nine, his father died and his mother took him to live with Chief Jongintaba, who was the regent of the Thembu people. Jongintaba and his wife considered him their own child and provided an education for him. He didn’t see his mother for years.
