11. BABE RUTH
The legendary baseball player, known as The Sultan of Swat and The Bambino, Babe Ruth is one of the first truly great figures of American professional baseball. He played 22 seasons for MLB, starting with the Boston Red Sox and achieving his fame with the Yankees. He established a number of MLB records, some of which still hold today, and was one of the first five persons to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Babe Ruth was born George Herman Ruth, Jr. in Baltimore, to parents of German ancestry. The family owned a saloon and lived in the apartment above it. At some point, for reasons that are still not very clear, young George was sent to St. Mary’s reformatory and orphanage. It is believed that the authorities felt the saloon was not the ideal place to raise a young boy. He was occasionally allowed to stay with his family but he spent much of his life from the age of seven until he was 19 in the orphanage.
