21. BILLY JOEL

The acclaimed pianist, singer-songwriter, lyricist, and composer first rose to prominence with his 1973 smash hit Piano Man, which has since become an anthem of sorts. Following that single, his career skyrocketed and major hits followed, including Uptown Girl, Only the Good Die Young, New York State of Mind, Don’t Ask me Why, and many, many more. Joel has won six Grammy Awards and was nominated for another 23, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame and remains one of the best-selling American artists of all time.

However, before his career took off, Joel was going through a very difficult period. His career seemed to be going nowhere in the 1970s and Joel was severely depressed for years. At one point, he attempted suicide by drinking a bottle of furniture polisher (he later said he chose polisher because it looked tastier than bleach). Fortunately, he was immediately rushed to a hospital, put on suicide watch and treated for depression. His song Tomorrow is Today is inspired by his suicide note and You’re Only Human (Second Wind) is a message against teen suicide.
