19. DOLLY PARTON

Dolly Parton is a true American legend, one of the most important country music stars alive, and the holder of the female record for the number of No.1 Billboard hits (25 of them!). Parton is also a talented actress with two Academy Award nominations, noted for her roles in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias.

Famous for her perky, bubbly attitude, Parton is, however, no stranger to feeling blue. In fact, there was a point in her life when she was suffering from a depression so severe that she even contemplated suicide. It was in the late 1980s while she was going through menopause. She realized that she and her husband of 45 years, Carl Thomas Dean, would never have children and that realization devastated her. Fortunately, her work with Sylvester Stallone in Rhinestone helped her make it through that difficult period, mostly, as she said, thanks to Stallone’s kindness and great sense of humor.
