16. J.K. ROWLING
J.K. Rowling needs a special introduction. The author of the wildly successful Harry Potter series of books, she is not just one of the most popular writers of our time, but also one of the wealthiest people in the world.
Die-hard fans probably already know this, but Rowling actually started writing her books as a way to cope with depression she had been struggling with for years. She hasn’t always been a billionaire, of course – in fact, she went through a really rough patch after she split with her husband and became a single mom of an infant daughter. They lived in a small, cramped apartment and did not have a lot of money. During that time, Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression and had suicidal thoughts. She once said that Dementors, the soul-sucking demons from her books, were directly inspired by depression. She continued writing and, according to her, that’s what helped her survive.
