15. JUDY GARLAND

Judy Garland was, without a doubt, one of the top actresses of the classic American cinema. She started as a vaudevillian during her teens and soon signed with a major Hollywood studio. She was an incredibly talented singer and actress and her most memorable roles include, of course, The Wizard of Oz, A Star is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Pirate, and many more. She was married five times and had three children, including the famous Liza Minnelli.

Garland was struggling with depression for most of her life. The first time she sought professional help was when she was a little girl and her father had just died. As it was revealed years later, Garland was given amphetamines during the filming of Oz to keep her in good shape, slim and perky. This created an addiction problem that lasted her entire lifetime. Her first suicide attempt came in 1950. She managed to keep her addiction and depression at bay for almost two decades, but finally broke down and committed suicide by overdose in 1969.
