3. Judy Garland
Born to a couple of vaudevillians who found home in the Grand Rapids, Frances Ethel Gumm was sort of destined to make it. Only not as Frances Ethel Gumm. She became one of America’s biggest movie icons, but under the name Judy Garland.
Most people know Judy from The Wizard of Oz but she was already famous when she got the role of Dorothy from Kansas (not Minnesota, mind you). After the immense success of the movie, she transitioned into more adult movies.
Judy, however, was never all that lucky in her private life, often suffering from low self-esteem and turning to drugs and alcohol. She was only 47 when she died from a barbiturate overdose. The world lost an incredible actress that day. And a great Minnesotan.
