21. Tionne Tenese Watkins
Despite some conclusions you may have jumped to when you saw her middle name, T-Boz was actually born in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 26, 1970. Her parents, James and Gayle Watkins, moved the family to Atlanta when she was just 9 years old. Watkins was diagnosed with sickle-cell anemia as a child and had her share of hospital time because of her illness; as a teen, she had to learn how to cope with the disease and its treatment.
When Watkins was 21, she started working in a hair salon in Atlanta. It was then that she auditioned for an all-female vocal trio that was being put together by singer Crystal Jones. Because of her distinctive raspy vocals, as well as the emotions she puts into her singing, Jones chose Watkins to join her, along with Lisa Lopes. The group was originally known as 2nd Nature but was soon renamed to TLC.
