Like many other on this list, he was also born in Des Moines, Iowa, to parents of Norwegian origin. Halston was originally given the name Roy Halston Frowick, but he dropped his first and last names, preferring the moniker. He enjoyed altering and making clothes for his mother and sister as a boy, and he later studied at Indiana University and then at the Art Institute of Chicago.

His hat designs brought the fantastic to whimsy since he used all manners of jewels, flowers, and fringe imaginable to decorate his work.
