16. Cloris Leachman
The oldest of the three daughters of Cloris (Wallace) and Berkeley Claiborne Leachman, Cloris was born on April 30, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa. Her father had a family lumber business and her mother never said “no” to Cloris’ early-shown interest in entertainment. In 1946, while attending Northwestern University, Leachman competed in the Miss America pageant as Miss Chicago. Although she didn’t win the title, she used her pageant winnings to move to New York City and begin an acting career.
Leachman managed to achieve success as an actor in theater, television and film. She has performed in projects ranging from dramas to Mel Brooks comedies to Dancing with the Stars and is best known for her Academy Award-winning role in The Last Show. You might also remember her as the nosy neighbor on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
