15. Buffalo Bill

Buffalo Bill, or William Frederick Cody, was born in Scott County, Iowa, in 1846. A true hero of the American heritage, he rode on the Pony Express when he was just 14, fought in the American Civil War, and served as a scout for the Army. Basically, he was already an Old West legend long before mounting his famous Wild West show, which traveled throughout both the United States and Europe.

Born near LeClair in Scott County, Bill worked for a freight company as a messenger and wrangler before he decided it was time to move on. He tried his luck as a prospector in the Pikes Peak gold rush in 1859, and joined the Pony Express a year later, perfectly fitting the bill for the advertised position: “skinny, expert riders willing to risk death daily.”
