10. Herbert Hoover

Hoover was born on August 10, 1874, in West Branch, Iowa, and was the first president born west of the Mississippi River. He was generally observed as a “good guy,” although he had the misfortune of being the running president when the Great Depression began, only a year after he claimed that America was nearer to “the final triumph over poverty than ever before in the history of any land.”

A lifelong humanitarian, Hoover was in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and he organized the relief efforts for foreigners happened to be trapped there. Four years later, he assisted Americans stranded in Europe when WWI began, and three years after that, he was appointed as head of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, procuring food for over 9 million war-affected Belgians.
