Winona Ryder had a bit of a misdemeanor adventure when she was caught shoplifting in late 2001 and ended up arrested as a result. The Beetlejuice star was prevented from stealing around $5,500 worth of designer clothes from a Saks Fifth Avenue shop. She agreed to pay two Civil Demands, as permitted under California’s Statute for Civil Recovery for Shoplifting, thus reimbursing the store for the goods she had stolen.
Ryder explained in an interview with Interview Magazine that it happened during a low point in her career, adding that heavy painkillers significantly affected her judgment. During the trial, she was accused of using all sorts of drugs without valid prescriptions, like Oxycodone, Diazepam, and Vicodin. At one point, in a desperate attempt to ease up the situation, Ryder claimed that she had merely been doing research for a movie role. Like that would ever work, anywhere.
