20. Gary Coleman
Once the highest-paid television actor during his time at Diff’rent Strokes, the late Coleman was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1999.
During his television heyday, Coleman’s net worth was estimated at $7 million dollars. It was a lot of money for a television actor at the time. Some ten years later, unable to land jobs as lucrative and successful as the role of the wisecracking Arnold Jackson, Coleman found himself owing some $72,000 and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. So what went wrong for the 4’8’’ star?
Coleman didn’t like to make his personal issues public, so not many people knew he was actually of very poor health. He was born with a congenital kidney disease and underwent two kidney transplants. His condition, especially the dialysis he had to undergo daily, cost a lot of money. Another thing that served as a money pit for Coleman was the ongoing legal battle with his adoptive parents, who, according to him, mishandled his substantial trust fund.
