Struggling with her illness (she has Lupus, one of the world’s cruelest, most unpredictable, and devastating diseases) she lost over 50 million dollars because she wasn’t able to perform scheduled shows in Las Vegas. This was her second bankruptcy; the first one was back in 1998.
One of the best-selling recording artists of the 1990s, the diva filed for bankruptcy twice. She explained that her first recording contract brought her a measly check and then she was pretty much constantly without money, using record advancements to cover previous debts, in a sort of a vicious circle. In all honesty, her addiction to home décor and expensive dishes and silverware didn’t help either.
Her second bankruptcy came when she was forced to cancel her self-financed shows in Vegas due to her illness. The bankruptcy worked well for her, though, and she got to keep some of her very expensive personal belongings, including a Porsche.
