Basinger, of course, didn’t buy the actual town – she bought some vacant privately-owned land with the idea of turning it into a tourist attraction, with a film festival, studios and all. As she later stated, nothing good came out of that investment, as she was forced to sell it piece by piece to cover her debts and it even caused rifts in her family.
Her next financial fiasco came in when she pulled out of Boxing Helena and the studio sued her for $8.1 million. They eventually settled to $3.8 million, but it was still a devastating blow for Basinger.
