Julia Sweeney, a comedian and actress, was raised in a Christian family and was religious for a large portion of her life. What made her change her mind were two boys belonging to the Mormon Church.
Namely, the boys came to her door and told her the story of their Church and how Mormons came to be. The story sounded so unbelievable to Sweeney, that she started questioning her own religion, and came to the conclusion that the Christian story was equally unbelievable when heard for the very first time.
Julia who, as a child, wanted to become a nun did not find it difficult to come out as a nonreligious person. Her one-woman show Letting Go Of God (in which she tells how she became an atheist) was extremely successful in Los Angeles.
