16. Benji and Joel Madden
There’s a very strong connection between twins Benji and Joel Madden and they form the backbone of the band Good Charlotte. Joel is the lead vocalist in the pop punk band whilst Benji sings back-up and plays lead guitar.
Just outside of Washington, D.C., in the suburb of Waldorf, Md., Roger Combs, their father and Robin Madden, their mother, welcomed their identical twin boys to the world, Joel and Benji. Mother Robin was a devout Christian, and all of her four kids (including the eldest son Josh and the youngest child Sarah) are troubled by Roger’s struggle with alcoholism and his inability to stick to one job. Childhood was rough for these boys.
After visiting a Beastie Boys concert, Benji and Joel formed Good Charlotte with bassist Paul Thomas. After graduating from La Plata High School, they completed their band with their new guitarist Billy Martin. Their band’s mission is to conquer the world.
“The day we started the band, the question was when we were going to make it, not if we were gonna make it,” Joel tells Rolling Stone.
Good Charlotte’s demo “Little Things,” got into the hands of a DJ in Philadelphia and become a local hit. Its first airing got them a showcase in New York, where the band signed with Epic Records. In September 2000, they released an album, which unfortunately failed to make an impression.
In 2003, the band appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, with an article headlined: “Good Charlotte love their mom, don’t do drugs and are delighted to be on TRL. What the hell happened to punk rock?”
Joel, not discouraged by the headline told the magazine, “It’s very cliché to go, ‘You’re not punk.’ We don’t care if we are, and we don’t care if we aren’t.”
