Though she kept it as a secret for many years, Catherine Zeta-Jones opened up about mental illness a few years back and revealed that she suffered from bipolar II disorder, an illness which had taken control of her entire life and affected her career.
She did everything in her power to control the disorder but experienced serious problems when her husband Michael Douglas was diagnosed with cancer. The Hollywood beauty later said that Douglas’ helped her a lot during the most difficult time of their lives, and added that both his cancer and her disorder made them closer. The Oscar-winning actress first sought treatment for bipolar in April 2011 and has spoken about her struggles with mental illness ever since.
Here’s what she told People:
This is a disorder that affects millions of people, and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it…There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.
