Drew Carey has never been ashamed to admit that he suffered from depression and even tried to take his own life on more than one occasion.
In his bestselling autobiography Dirty Jokes and Beer: Stories of the Unrefined, Carey opened up about his long-lasting battle with mental illness and suicide attempts in order to destigmatize mental health problems and show that celebrities are people like the rest of us – they have inner demons, too. The biggest problem is that stars are afraid to admit that something is wrong and rarely speak about mental illness in public. Here’s what Carey said:
Living in Hollywood, you can get disconnected from everybody. You can feel like you are the only one. So you feel it, you hold it in and you don’t let it go and you don’t try to find help because you think, ‘Oh man if I tell anybody, I’m going to seem like I’m weak. I won’t get a movie deal. I won’t get invited to…’ whatever goes through your head.
