Melisandre of Asshai, also known as The Red Woman, is a major character in the second, third and fourth seasons of ‘’Game of Thrones.’’ She is played by the Dutch actress Carice van Houten.
The 37-year-old actress is extremely popular in the Netherlands and she appeared in the ‘’Black Book,’’ the most commercially successful Dutch film of all time. She is best known for English-speaking films such as ‘’ Valkyrie’’, ‘’Repo Men’’ and ‘’Black Death.’’ The stunning actress also released a pop-rock album ‘’See You on the Ice’’ in 2012. The talented Red Woman is fluent in Dutch, English, German and French.
Initially, she was supposed to play Cersei Lannister, but Carice refused, due to schedule conflicts with the film ‘’Intruders.’’ Van Houten confessed that she was not a fan of Hollywood and that the American film industry made her unhappy.
‘’I’m not as keen on playing in the American big leagues. There’s so much more to my life than being in a big American movie. I’m a singer and working on my second album. I write and produce. There is so much more that satisfies me. I will never become an American movie star. I’m a European actress that is lucky to be in a show like [‘Game of Thrones’].’’
