11. Strom Thurmond had a secret love child too
Although always actively against the integrations of black and white people Strom Thurmond actually fathered a child with a black woman many years earlier. The lady didn’t reveal the identity of her father until after he died in 2003, but apparently he had an affair when he was in his early 20’s with a teenage maid at his home.
The mixed-race daughter herself died in 2013 at the age of 87. Thurmond never publically acknowledged her, since he was a Republic that was completely against equal rights for black people in America. He lived to be 100 years old, and in all that time, he was never able to acknowledge that he had a child with a black woman.
The daughter, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, was born in 1925 after Thurmond had an affair with her mother, who was a 16 year-old maid that worked for his family at the time.
