15. Adam Sandler
Funnyman Adam Sandler is probably best known for his work on Saturday Night Live as well as a string of successful Hollywood movies, including “Airheads,” “Happy Gilmore,” “Billy Madison” “Big Daddy,” “Mr. Deeds,” “Eight Crazy Nights” and “Punch-Drunk Love.”
But before all of the box office success, Sandler was a moderately successful stand-up comedian working in the Los Angeles area in the 1980s. When fellow comedian Dennis Miller saw his act, he recommended Sandler to Lorne Michaels for a shot at SNL. Sandler auditioned but was hired as a writer, not a performer.
However, he eventually appeared on air in a skit as Tom Hanks’s brother in 1990. After more appearances, Sandler became a cast member in the 1993-94 season. Panned by critics for being hit or miss with many of his characters, Sandler is mostly remembered from SNL for his ridiculous but catchy songs like “LunchLady Land” and “The Hanukkah Song.”
While his resume might cause some to believe that politics and the advancement of society aren’t topics that Adam Sandler is actively involved in, he happens to be both a proud member of the Jewish community as well as a registered Republican. While this is somewhat uncharacteristic for a Jewish person, Sandler breaks with convention both in his work and his political life.
He is fairly active in Republican politics, which is rare for a conservative actor. In 2008, Adam Sandler confirmed that he is a supporter of the GOP when he made a contribution to Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign fund. USA today reported that Sandler supported the Republican, and Sandler’s actions confirmed it with a $2,100 donation to Giuliani’s failed 2008 Republican primary campaign.
While not too much else is known about the “Billy Madison” star’s politics, one could speculate that his conservative values come through in other ways — notably, his silence and lack of support when it comes to the views and opinions of his more liberal and outspoken Hollywood actor friends.
While Hollywood is well known for being the land of the liberals, not all actors and celebrities are of the same stripe or affiliation. As you can see from this list, the Republican party is still very much alive in Hollywood. While a lot of conservatives remain somewhat low-key and hidden about their political views, it’s clear there is still plenty of open conservatism to be found in Tinseltown.
