14. James Caan
Hollywood has definitely come to be known as a very, very liberal town, a Democratic stronghold of sorts.
By comparison, there have been relatively few openly conservative celebrities throughout the history of Hollywood: Charlton Heston, John Wayne, and Frank Sinatra were proud and outspoken about their Republican leanings, but they were in the minority. Many of today’s Hollywood’s GOP members seem almost eerily closeted by comparison.
Not so when it comes to James Caan. Caan is a bit of a throwback who has openly referred to himself as an “ultra-conservative,” according to Fox news. He has stated that he would never, ever be a part of the “Hollywood liberal” club.
He used to be a bit more closed-lipped about his political leanings, but as the years have gone by, Caan has seemed less and less willing to be reticent and is not afraid to reveal his staunch Republican point of view.
In 2011, Caan went on The Bill O’ Reilly Show and chatted about being a right wing conservative in Hollywood. He revealed that his views were forged in part by working with and getting to know the iconic actor John Wayne in ”El Dorado.” John Wayne was notoriously one of Hollywood’s most outspoken conservatives at a time when politics was not very openly discussed at all in the entertainment industry.
Caan has also expressed that he is a big fan of Bill O’Reilly and his show and that he only watches Fox News. When asked about pushing his own political agenda as an actor, he demurred, stating that he doesn’t have a political science degree and doesn’t understand why so many liberals without degrees are so quick to get on a soapbox. It’s probably safe to say that we won’t see James Caan running for political office anytime soon.
