If there is any celebrity that knew a thing or two about growing up rough, then it is the Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald. She had an absolutely terrible childhood. She was abused by family members, grew up around organized crime and was homeless for a while as well.
Fitzgerald’s mother died when she was young, and she was left in the care of her step-father, who was very abusive towards her. She ended up running away from her home and lived on the streets until she finally made her big debut at the Apollo Theater.
She was immediately recognized as being an amazing singer and her voice took her on a fast ride to fame and fortune. She won a total of 13 Grammys and received honors from two American presidents. She is a shining example of the fact that there is no way that talent can be denied when it is so obvious.
