19. Heath Ledger
If there is any actor for whom you could say that his death occurred at the absolute peak of his career, then it would be Heath Ledger. After being a struggling young actor, Ledger was finally getting the career defining roles that he was looking for. The Australian actor will remain known for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. He even received an Academy Reward for Best Actor for the role, even though he unfortunately was not alive to receive it.
He died in 2008 of a drug overdose. He was found in his New York City apartment by his housekeeper and masseuse. He had apparently overdosed on prescription drugs.
He was taking a variety of medications that were prescribed for a large variety of medical issues, including insomnia, anxiety, pain and even the common cold. This combination of drugs is very rarely, if at all, prescribed to one patient at the same time.
There was a federal investigation into two doctors that were treating Ledger, but none of them were found guilty of his death.
