16. Marvin Gaye
Probably the greatest soul singer of all time, Gaye’s death was another family related tragedy. The singer had been living with his parents for some time because he was very depressed and at times suicidal. He was shot and killed by his own father in 1984 after an argument about some documents that were misplaced.
The 70s had been a rough time for Gaye. He fled to Europe because of a tax scandal and did not come back to the States until the early 1980s. He had a big hit in 1983, which might have been his greatest hit of all time – Sexual Healing.
Right around that time, he started using cocaine again while he was on the road, which led to even more problems. He started to develop an acute case of paranoia because of the drugs and the stress, and at one point in the tour, he was afraid that someone was trying to kill him and always wore a bullet proof vest on stage.
Shortly after, he went to live with his parents in the house that he had originally bought for himself in 1975, but given to them. His main reason for returning to the US was to look after his mother, who had kidney problems.
