This great comedian was the victim of a 1998 murder suicide by his own wife.
According to police reports, his wife Brynn was at a restaurant that night with producer Christine Zander, who testified later that she was in a “good frame of mind.” When she got home, she and Phil got into an argument. The argument was about her drug use. Phil said that he would leave her if she started using drugs again. He then went to bed after the argument ended.
Brynn walked into the bedroom at around 3am and shot Phil in the head twice, fatally wounding him. According to the police, she was using cocaine at the time and was heavily intoxicated as well.
She then drove to a friend’s house and confessed to her about the killing; however, that friend did not believe her at first. She and her friend, Ron Douglas, drove back to the scene of the crime in two separate cars.
Douglas saw the body of the comedian and called the police. The police came and took the couple’s two children and Douglas away from the scene. However, in the meantime, Brynn had locked herself in the bathroom and had committed suicide.
