6. MISSY ELLIOTT
Melissa Arnette Elliott is a rapper, singer-songwriter, and record producer who sold over 30 million records in the United States. She is the only female rapper to have six albums certified platinum by the RIAA, including one double platinum for her 2002 album Under Construction.
After all the years she spent as one of the most notable female rappers in the world, she stepped down and mostly produced records. In June 2011, she admitted to People magazine that she suffers from Graves’ disease and that this is the reason why she had to withdraw from the music industry.
Her symptoms were so severe that, at one point, she could not even hold a pen up to write songs. Graves’ disease or Basedow-Graves disease is an autoimmune disease that most commonly affects the thyroid, frequently causing it to enlarge to twice its size or more.
