The gorgeous American model was at the height of her career in the 1990s, when smoking was not as shunned as it is today and when it was a major part of the fashion industry. She had been smoking a pack or even two a day for a long while before she finally quit.
Turlington says quitting was very hard for her and she had to try several times before she finally made it. She tried everything, from the patch to hypnosis and acupuncture but it wasn’t until she got tired of not keeping promises to herself that she became mentally prepared for the decision. Once the real decision was there, she said, going cold turkey didn’t seem all that impossible.
There was a certain scandal surrounding her quitting smoking. Six months after she quit, she was supposed to do an Yves Saint Laurent show, but since she gained a little bit of weight the designer fired her. As a result, she quit the runway altogether. Today, Turlington is a passionate anti-smoking advocate.
