The comedian, and Daily Show host, smoked for a very long time. He started smoking back when he was 15 and did not quit until 2000. That means that he was actively smoking for 23 years. Asked about why he smoked, he said that it made him feel good and that it was an emotional crutch that he used to feel better whenever he needed to lighten his spirit.
After he stopped, he said that the hardest thing for him was finding a replacement for the cigarette when he was having coffee. Once he was able to drink coffee without smoking, he was officially done with them. He also said that he had a gumball machine in his office, and that chewing gum whenever he had a nicotine craving also helped him get over smoking.
